Inaugural Bristol Learning Festival 2020 – Opportunity to take part!

News from Bristol Learning City Team:

Bristol has been a Learning City since 2015, but unlike many Learning Cities in the UNESCO network, particularly those in the UK and Ireland, we do not currently host an annual Lifelong Learning Festival. You will be happy to know that is all about to change!

On the 1st July the Learning City Partnership Board made the decision to host our inaugural festival starting on the 30th March 2020 and finishing on the 5th April.

The aim of the Festival is to get people learning, trying something new, meeting new people and most importantly having fun! Bristol has a rich tapestry of learning taking place right across the city. Every day many Bristol citizens are learning, whether that is in schools, workplaces or in their communities. But for many learning is something that ends when they leave formal education and it is this culture we are seeking to change. We want to shine a light on all the amazing learning opportunities our city has to offer and show our citizens that there is something for everyone.

We know change takes time and we are not expecting to break down barriers to learning overnight, but we are in it for the long-term. Bristol has recently launched its One City Vision for 2050. To create this fairer and more equal city we all need to work together. A Learning Festival is one of the ways we can do this and this is how you can support it.

What we are asking partners to do is run a minimum of one free learning activity during the week of 30th March – 5th April 2020. Activities can be quirky or niche, but all that we ask is that they are free, accessible and open to all. Those taking part will be asked to manage the attendance of their own event, this can be through an Eventbrite page or via email. To promote your activity we will need you to provide us with your logo, a summary of the event, when and where it is taking place and who to contact. The Learning City team will work with partners to promote your activity and answer any questions you may have.

So what are the next steps? If you know of any potentially interested partners based in Bristol please ask them to get in touch by contacting us on Our aim is to launch the Festival with a minimum of 70 activities taking place across the city – with your help we can exceed this target and build on it in following years. We even have a hashtag #lovelearning.
