How you’ll make a difference:

As an apprentice, you will make a difference by developing and maintaining a supported living environment for elderly residents.  This job is very rewarding, you will help them keep their independence whilst providing physical, social and emotional support.

You will be a valuable member of the team, ensuring the comfort and safety of those that need our assistance. What will you be doing?
  • You will be required to work a variety of early and late shifts and alternate weekends. The earliest shift would commence at 7am with the latest shift ending at 10pm.
  • You’ll learn how to care and assist our residents with daily tasks including bathing, washing and dressing, helping them make daily choices or assisting them to eat and drink.
  • You’ll be working closely and alongside experienced staff who will help you to understand your responsibility for individuals through key working.
  • You will need to maintain resident records, and support those experiencing a change in their care requirements to help them maintain and develop their personal skills.
  • Our staff will also help you learn and understand how to administer and record medication as per current guidelines.
  • In addition, you will gain and develop knowledge of Care Plans, Case Reviews, Community Care Legislation, report writing and awareness of current legislation such as, Health and Safety at Work, Electricity regulations, COSHH, fire procedures and security checks of a building.
  • Importantly you’ll actively contribute to the protection of individuals from abuse, learning about safeguarding and the protection of vulnerable adults.
  • Throughout your 18 month apprenticeship, we will allocate you a workplace mentor to give you guidance and support in completing your Level 2 Adult Care, which will be delivered in the workplace by the City of Bristol College.

It is a requirement of employment that an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check is obtained for this post.  This means that you must declare any criminal convictions, cautions, reprimands or final warnings unless these are protected as defined by the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) order 1975 (amended in 2013).

Please note that as per the Care Quality Commission (CQC) requirements, a worker aged 18 or older is required for this post. All candidates that successfully reach the interview stages will be required to provide a 10 minute presentation as part of the recruitment process. The salary for this apprenticeship is set at the current National Minimum Wage;

Working location is Alexander Way Residential Care home, Thornbury, BS35 1LA.  The apprenticeship training is mainly through a work-based route. Your diploma will be delivered within the workplace where you may attend workshops with your college assessor.

To successfully complete the apprenticeship, you will be required you to complete an end point assessment that consists of a Situational Judgement Test and Professional Discussion.  For further detail about this apprenticeship, please see the attached job summary.

What we need from you:

  • You will ideally hold a minimum of GCSE A*-C (or Grade 4-9) or equivalent qualification in English and Maths or be willing to undertake and gain Functional Skills in English and Maths as part of the apprenticeship.
  • You must have the drive and willingness to learn new things and be committed to gaining your qualification.
  • Be committed to treat residents with dignity, respect, empathy and assist with personal care and other activities.
  • Demonstrate a positive approach in being flexible and adaptable to respond to unpredictable or unexpected situations.
